In the following article, we are going to explain several pattern and usage on using the grammar pattern of -n desu. Since the question which is presented in Minna no Nihongo 2 chapter 26 section B part 1 on page 5 also discuss on the grammar pattern of -n desu we will give the pattern and also an example of using it. The following is an article which is used to describe the subject on chapter 26 in Minna no Nihongo 2 :

Pattern :

普通計            +-んです

ふつうけい  +-んです

futsuu kei  +-n desu

plain form  +-n desu

The grammar pattern –n desu is a Japanese grammar pattern which is made by combining it with the plain form. In the example below, first of all, we will give an example in form of a formal form in a sentence. After that, we will give an example based on the formal form to be modified into a plain form. The plain form itself will be modified to be used with the Japanese grammar pattern –n desu as follows :

Example     :

Formal Form

Kanji       : このレポートが役に立ちます。

Hiragana    : このレポートがやくにたちます。

Romaji            : Kono repo-to ga yaku ni tachimasu.

Meaning     : This report is useful.

Plain Form :

Kanji       : 色々な情報をもらってからこのレポートはやくにたつのです。

Hiragana    : いろいろなじょうほうをもらってからこのレポートはやくにたつのです。

Romaji            : iro iro a jyouhou wo moratte kara kono repo-to wa yaku ni tatsu no desu.

Meaning     : because (i) receive various information, this report is useful.

 

Plain Form with an –n desu grammar pattern :

Kanji       : 色々な情報をもらってからこのレポートは役に立ったんです

Hiragana    : いろいろなじょうほうをもらってからこのレポートはやくにたったんです。

Romaji            : iro iro na jyouhou wo moratte kara kono repo-to wa yaku ni

tattan desu.

Meaning     : because (i) receive various information, this report is useful.

 

Usually we are using the –n desu grammar pattern as follows :

  1. Part of the conversation pattern.

In an informal situation, we tend to use this pattern especially in an conversation.

  1. To focus or emphasize on giving reason or explanation.

Based on the above explanation involving pattern and the example, we will give the answers as follows :

1.Answer

Kanji                   :

山へ 行くんです。

Hiragana            :

やまへ いくんです。

Romaji               :

Yama e ikun desu.

Meaning           :

I go to the mountain.

2.Answer

Kanji                  :

エレベ-タ-に 乗らないんです。

Hiragana            :

エレベ-タ-に のらないんです。

Romaji               :

erebe-ta- ni noranain desu.

Meaning           :

I don’t get on elevator.

3.Answer

Kanji                   :

シュミットさんが 作ったんです。

Hiragana            :

シュミットさんが つくったんです。

Romaji               :

Shumitto-san ga tsukuttan desu.

Meaning           :

Schmit made it.

4.Answer

Kanji                   :

気分が 悪いんです。

Hiragana            :

きぶんが わるいんです。

Romaji               :

Kibun ga waruin desu.

Meaning           :

I feel bad (terrible).
