Another article is created in order to describe on how to complete the interrogative question which is given in the problem shown in The complete question is displayed in Shin Nihongo no Kiso I chapter 3 practice C part 4 on page 27. It is an article which is given as an exercise on choosing the right interrogative pronoun such as where, how much and how old. We will give certain example which is similar to those displayed in the problems given in the book. Below is the pattern and also the example :

どこ and どちら

In order to ask certain location, a person’s whereabouts, a person’s origin or an item’s originated from we can actually use どこ or どちら which can be interchangeable actually. But it depends on the situation or context, どちら is preferably used in a polite or formal situation where the other one, どこ, in a more informal way. Both of it can be translated as where but as both of it used in the sentence there is a slight differentiation in meaning.

It can be assumed that it can be used to ask where is the location but further more it is focusing on which way or how can the person whom asked can arrive on the location which is being asked. But further more, in a polite conversation, it can be used to ask for someone’s name in a humble way. Below is the example :

A : お会議室はどちらですか

B : 。。。あちらです。

A : おかいぎしつはどちらですか

B : 。。。あちらです。

A : Okaigishitsu wa dochira desuka ?

B : … achira desu.

A : Which way is the location of the meeting room ?

B : …that way.

Another example on asking someone : Kanji :

Sono shiroi uwagi wo chakuyou suru ga dochira sama desuka ?

… Kono kaisha no shachou desu.

Who is the person wore that white coat might be ?

… It is this company’s president.

どこ is focusing on where is the exact location which is being asked. Below is the example on the usage : Kanji :

Shoubousho wa doko desuka ?

…shoubousho wa eigakan no tonari desu.

Meaning :

Where is the fire station located ?

…the fire station is located near the cinema (movie theatre).

Another pattern which is used in order to answer several problems discussed in Shin Nihongo no Kiso is using いくら to ask an item of a price or service. The example is given below : Kanji

How much does it cost from Tokyo train station to Shin-Aomori train station by shinkansen ?

何歳(なんさい)is also another pattern which is provided in this article. It is used to ask someone’s age or how old a person is. Below is the example : Kanji
