This article discuss on various demonstrative pronoun and its interrogative pronoun. Those demonstrative pronoun and its interrogative pronoun differs with one another so their functions respectively. We will discuss all of the demonstrative pronoun and also its interrogative pronoun one by one below. With all the discussion on using the demonstrative pronoun and its interrogative pronoun respectively, it will be used to answer the question by choosing which one is the correct demonstrative pronoun or the interrogative pronoun as the correct answer depends on the form of the question from the answer choices given on the question. The complete question is given in the problem shown in Shin Nihongo no Kiso I chapter 3 practice C part 5 on page 27.

Below is the demonstrative pronoun used to point out something without pronouncing the object because it is not necessary to do it. It doesn’t need to be said in the conversation since both party has already knew the object or the object has already been found out.

これ (kore) : this

It is a demonstrative pronoun used to point out a thing near to the speaker and the listener.

Pattern :

Kanji            : これ      +は +。。。( 名詞 )       +(です)

Hiragana    : これ      +は  +。。。( めいし )     +(です)

Romaji        : kore      +wa  +。。。( meishi )     + (desu)

Meaning     : this      +is  +。。。( noun )

 

Example :

Kanji            : これはわたしの教科書です

Hiragana    : これはわたしのきょうかしょです

Romaji        : Kore wa watashi no kyoukasho desu.

Meaning     : This is my text book.

それ (sore) : that

It is a demonstrative pronoun used to point out a thing far from the speaker but it is near to the listener.

Pattern :

Kanji            : それ      +は +。。。( 名詞 )       +(です)

Hiragana    : それ      +は  +。。。( めいし )     +(です)

Romaji        : sore      +wa  +。。。( meishi )     + (desu)

Meaning     : this      +is  +。。。( noun )

Example :

Kanji           : それは新しい洗濯機です.

Hiragan     : それはあたらしいせんたくきです

Romaji       : Sore wa atarashii sentakuki desu.

Meaning    : That is a new washing machine.

あれ(are) : that

It is a demonstrative pronoun used to point out a thing far from the speaker and also from the listener.

Pattern :

Kanji            : あれ      +は +。。。( 名詞 )       +(です)

Hiragana    : あれ      +は  +。。。( めいし )     +(です)

Romaji        : are       +wa  +。。。( meishi )     +(desu)

Meaning     : that      +is  +。。。( noun )

Example :

Kanji           :あれは消防夫です。

Hiragan     :あれはしょうぼうふです。

Romaji       : Are wa shouboufu desu.

Meaning    : That is a fireman.

どれ(dore) : which one

It is an interrogative pronoun used to ask for an object or a thing.

Pattern :

Kanji            : ( 名詞 ) +は +どれ  +ですか

Hiragana    : ( めいし )+は +どれ +ですか

Romaji        : ( meishi )+wa +dore  +desuka

Meaning     : which is the +( noun )+。。。?

Example :

Kanji            : 日本の新規はどれですか

Hiragana    : にほんのしんきはどれですか

Romaji        : nihon no shinki wa dore desuka ?

Meaning     : Which one is the Japanese novel ?.

It is an demonstrative pronoun which is directly followed by noun. It is used to point out an item which is near from the speaker and also the listener.

Pattern :

Kanji            : この      +( 名詞 )    + は +。。。+(です)

Hiragana    : この      +( めいし )  + は +。。。+(です)

Romaji        : kono      +( meishi ) + wa +。。。+(desu)

Meaning     : this      +( noun )    + is +。。。

Example :

Kanji            : この眼鏡は壊れてしまいました。

Hiragana    : このめがねはこわれてしまいました。

Romaji        : kono megane wa kowarete shimaimashita.

Meaning     : This eyeglasses has already broken.

Meaning     : that      +( noun )    + is +。。。

Kanji            : その冷蔵庫は高そうですね。

Hiragana    : そのれいぞうこはたかそうですね。

Romaji        : Sono reizouko wa takasou desu ne.

Meaning     : That refrigerator seems expensive.

あの (ano) : that

It is an demonstrative pronoun which is directly followed by then noun. It is used to point out item which is far not only from the speaker but also from the listener.

Pattern :

Kanji            : あの      +( 名詞 )    + は +。。。+(です)

Hiragana    : あの      +( めいし )  + は +。。。+(です)

Romaji        : ano       +( meishi ) + wa +。。。+(desu)

Meaning     : that      +( noun )    + is +。。。

Example :

Kanji            : あの料理は日本の料理ですからあまり辛くないです。

Hiragana    : あのりょうりはにほんのりょうりですからあまりからくないです。

Romaji        : Ano ryouri wa nihon no ryouri desukara amari karakunai desu.

Meaning     : Because that is a Japanese dishes it is not too spicy at all.

どの (dono) : which one

It is an interrogative pronoun which is directly followed by then noun. It is used to ask certain item or object which is asked by the speaker.

Kanji            : どの      +( 名詞 )    + は +。。。+ですか

Hiragana    : どの      +( めいし )  + は +。。。+ですか

Romaji        : dono      +( meishi ) + wa +。。。+desuka

Meaning     : which     +( noun )    + is +。。。

Example :

Kanji            : フランスから来ましたの交換学生はどの交換が食いせいですか。

Hiragana    : フランスからきましたのこうかんがくせいはどのこうかんがくせいですか。

Romaji        : Furansu kara kimashita no koukan gakusei wa dono koukan gakusei desuka.

Meaning     : Which exchange student is the one whom came from France ?.

It is also a demonstrative pronoun but it is specifically use to point out specific thing which is a place or a location. It is used to point out a place or a location near both speaker and listener.

Kanji            : ここ+は +( 名詞:場所 )                 +。。。(です)

Hiragana    : ここ+は  +( めいし:ばしょう )          +。。。(です)

Romaji        : koko+wa  +( meishi:basho )            +。。。(desu)

Meaning     : this+is  +( noun : location, place )    +。。。

Example :

Kanji            : ここは警察署です。

Hiragana    : ここはけいさつしょです。

Romaji        : Koko wa keisatsusho desu.

Meaning     : This is the police station.

It is also a demonstrative pronoun but it is specifically use to point out specific thing which is a place or a location. It is used to point out a place or a location far from the speaker but closer to the listener.

Kanji            : そこ+は +( 名詞:場所 )                 +。。。(です)

Hiragana    : そこ+は  +( めいし:ばしょう )          +。。。(です)

Romaji        : soko+wa  +( meishi:basho )            +。。。(desu)

Meaning     : that+is  +( noun : location, place )    +。。。

Example :

Kanji            : そこは遊園地です。

Hiragana    : そこはゆうえんちです。

Romaji        : Soko wa yuuenchi desu.

Meaning     : That is the amusement park.

It is also a demonstrative pronoun but it is specifically use to point out specific thing which is a place or a location. It is used to point out a place or a location far from both the speaker and the listener.

Kanji            : あそこ+は +( 名詞:場所 )               +。。。(です)

Hiragana    : あそこ+は +( めいし:ばしょう )        +。。。(です)

Romaji        : asoko +wa +( meishi:basho )          +。。。(desu)

Meaning     : that +is +( noun : location, place ) +。。。

Example :

Kanji            : あそこは博物館です。

Hiragana    : あそこははくぶつかんです。

Romaji        : Asoko wa hakubutsukan desu.

Meaning     : That is the museum.

It is also a demonstrative pronoun but it is specifically use to point out specific thing which is a place or a location. It is used to point out a place or a location far from both the speaker and the listener.

Meaning     :  where   +is  +( noun : location, place ) ?

Kanji            :薬屋はどこですか。

Hiragana    :くすりやはどこですか。

Romaji        :Kusuriya wa doko desuka.

Meaning     :Where is the pharmacy (drug store)?.

こちら

It is also a demonstrative pronoun which is used in a polite form to point out specific thing which is a place or a location. But specifically it is also used to emphasize direction of the place or the location in a polite manner. The location or direction of the place or location is near both the speaker and the listener.

Kanji            :  こちら  +は+( 名詞:場所 )           +です

Hiragana    :  こちら  +は+( めいし:ばしょう )    +です

Romaji        :  kochira +wa+( meishi:basho )      +desu

Meaning     :  this (way)+is+( noun : location, place )

Example :

Kanji            : こちらは公益質屋です。

Hiragana    : こちらはこうえきしちやです。

Romaji        : Kochira wa kouekishichiya desu.

Meaning     : This (way) / This is the direction to the public pawn shop.

そちら

It is also a demonstrative pronoun which is used in a polite form to point out specific thing which is a place or a location. But specifically it is also used to emphasize direction of the place or the location in a polite manner. The location or direction of the place or location is relatively far from the speaker but it is closer to the listener.

Kanji            :  そちら  +は+( 名詞:場所 )           +です

Hiragana    :  そちら  +は+( めいし:ばしょう )    +です

Romaji        :  sochira +wa+( meishi:basho )      +desu

Meaning     :  this (way)+is+( noun : location, place )

Example :

Kanji            : そちらは孤児院です。

Hiragana    : そちらはこじいんです。

Romaji        : sochira wa koji in desu.

Meaning     : that (way) / this direction is the orphanage.

あちら

It is also a demonstrative pronoun which is used in a polite form to point out specific thing which is a place or a location. But specifically it is also used to emphasize direction of the place or the location in a polite manner. The location or direction of the place or location is relatively far from the speaker and also the listener.

Kanji            :  あちら  +は+( 名詞:場所 )           +です

Hiragana    :  あちら  +は+( めいし:ばしょう )    +です

Romaji        :  achira +wa+( meishi:basho )      +desu

Meaning     :  that (way)+is+( noun : location, place )

Example :

Kanji            : あちらは公選択矢です。

Hiragana    : あちらはせんたくやです。

Romaji        : achira wa sentakuya desu.

Meaning     : that (way) / that direction is the laundry shop.

どちら

Kanji            : ( 名詞:場所 )     +は+どちら  +ですか

Hiragana    : ( めいし:ばしょう)+は+どちら  +ですか

Romaji        : ( meishi:basho ) +wa+ dochira +desuka ?

Meaning     : which (way)          +is( noun : location, place )?

Example :

Kanji            : 乾物屋はどちらですか。

Hiragana    : かんぶつやどちらですか。

Romaji        : kanbutsuya dochira desuka.

Meaning     : which (way) / which direction is the grocery store ?.

1. (これ、この、ここ)は イギリスの たばこです。

Romaji :(kore、kono、koko)wa igirisu no tabako desu.

Meaning : That is an english cigarette.

2. (それ、その、そこ)かばんは (わたし、わたしは、わたしの)です。

Romaji :(sore, sono , soko)kaban wa(watashi、watashi wa、watashi no) desu.

Meaning : That bag is mine.

3. Kanji : お手洗いは (あれ、あの、あそこ)です。

Hiragana : おてあらいは (あれ、あの、あそこ)です。

Romaji : Otearai wa (are, ano, asoko) desu.

Meaning : The toilet is over there.

4. Kanji : すみません。受付は(だれ、何、どこ)ですか。

Hiragana  : すみません。うけつけは(だれ、なん、どこ)ですか。

Romaji : Sumimasen. Uketsuke wa (dare, nan, doko) desuka.

Meaning : Excuse me. Where is the reception (information desk) ?
