The article will discuss on the question displayed in Minna no Nihongo I book chapter 7 practice C part 6 in page 63. In this article, we will learn the usage of mou (もう) and mada (まだ). Both of it have their own meaning and also function in the sentence. We will display the sample, description and also the explanation of it. After displaying several samples, we do hope that it will help on answering the question given in the book accordingly.

mou (もう)

It can be translated as ‘already’. It is expressing something that we have already done. Because of describing something which has already done, the verb usage must be stated in a past form. Below is the example :

Kanji                      :その女優もう噂を否定しましたか

Hiragana              :そのじょゆうもううわさをひていしましたか

Romaji                  : sono jyoyuu mou uwasa wo hitei shimashitaka ?

Meaning              : has that actress already denied the rumor?

Below is another example in form of conversation :

Kanji      :



Hiragana              :



Romaji                  :

Ano hito mou sono yokei na koto wo shimashitaka ?

Hai, ano hito tashikani kesa mou sono yokei na koto wo shimashita.

Meaning              :

Has that person already done that kind of unnecessary thing ?

Yes, he has already done that kind of unnecessary thing this morning.

mada (まだ)

It can be translated as ‘not yet’. The usage is also has its own pattern since it is used to describe something that hasn’t been done so normally we do not use verb in the past form. Below is the example :

Kanji                      :今までにも子供時の夢はま叶いません。

Hiragana              :いままでにもこどもときのゆめはまだかないません。

Romaji                  : ima made ni mo kodomo toki no yume wa mada kanaimasen.

Meaning              : even up until now on my childhood dream has not yet become true.

We will give another example in a form of conversation using mada (まだ) :

Romaji :

Byouki sou nan desu. Mou taion wo hakarimashitaka ?.

Iie, mada desu.

Meaning :

You look ill. Have you already measured you temperature ?

No, not yet.

1. Answer


もう 大阪城へ 行きましたか。


。。。日曜日 ミラ-さんと行きます。いっしょに行きませんか。


Hiragana            :

もう おおさかへ いきましたか。




Romaji               :

Mou Oosaka e ikimashitaka.

。。。Iie, mada desu.

。。。Nichiyoubi, Mira-san to ikimasu. Issho ni ikimasenka ?.


Meaning           :

Have you went to Oosaka ?

。。。No, I haven’t

。。。I will go with Mira in Sunday. How about going together ?.


2. Answer

Kanji                   :

もう クリスマスカードを 書きましたか。

。。。はい、もう 書きました。


Hiragana            :

もう クリスマスカードを かきましたか。



Romaji               :

Mou kurisumasu ka-do wo kakimashitaka.

。。。Hai, mou kakimashita.


Meaning           :

Have you wrote a christmast card ?

。。。Yes, I did .


3. Answer

Kanji                   :

もう 荷物を 送りました。




Hiragana            :

もう にもつを おくりましたか。




Romaji               :

Mou nimotsu wo okurimashita ? .

。。。Iie, mada desu.

。。。Kyou no gogo ni nimotsu wo okurimasu.


Meaning           :


Have you sent the package ?.

。。。No, I haven’t

。。。Today’s afternoon (I) will send the package.



4. Answer

Kanji                   :

テレサちゃんは もう 寝ましたか。



Hiragana            :




Romaji               :

Teresa-chan wa mou nemashitaka ?.

。。。Yes, (she) has already slept.
