This is an article which is demonstrating the usage of demonstrative through interrogative sentence or a question in chapter 2 page 21 in Minna no Nihongo book. The book itself is used as a learning material for a beginner in order to study Japanese language. To see the problems, please buy the original Minna no Nihongo book. It is actually focus on the usage of demonstrative not on the noun which is displayed in the picture. focus on Based on the answer which is given, we can also use it as an introduction to use demonstrative in Japanese language especially on using it in an interrogative sentence.

1.  これは(新聞)ですか。

。。。。はい、新聞です。

Hiragana :

これは(しんぶん)ですか。

。。。。はい、しんぶんです。

Romaji :

Kore wa (shinbun) desuka ?.

…. Hai, shinbun desu.

Meaning :

Is that a newspaper ?

…. Yes, it is a newspaper.

We are using新聞 as the answer since it is provided in the answer. By using これ as a demonstrative, we are asking is it true that the noun which is being pointed is a newspaper.

2.  それは(何)ですか。

。。。。テレホンカードです。

Hiragana :

それは(なん)ですか。

。。。。テレホンカードです。

Romaji :

Sore wa (nan) desuka?.

…. Terehon ka-do desu.

Meaning :

What is that ?

…. Telephone Card.

We are using (なん) as an interrogative pronoun to ask what is the noun which is being pointed. We are using demonstrative それ to point out the noun which is being asked.

3.  それは(何)のテープですか。

。。。。韓国語のテープです。

Hiragana :

それは(なん)のテープですか。

。。。。かんこくごのテープです。

Romaji :

Sore wa nan no te-pu desuka.

…. Kankokugo no te-pu desu.

Meaning :

What kind of tape is that ?

…. Korean language tape.

We are using 何 (なん) as the interrogative pronoun to ask a detail description of the noun which is being pointed by combining it with . As we already knew that one of ’s function is to describe noun. それ is being used as a demonstrative to point out the noun which is being asked for detail description.

4.  それは(誰)の鉛筆ですか。

。。。。木村さんの鉛筆です。

Hiragana :

それは(だれ)のえんぴつですか。

。。。。きむらさんのえんぴつです。

Romaji :

Sore wa (dare) no enpitsu desuka.

…. Kimura-san no enpitsu desu.

Meaning :

Who’s pencil is that ?

…. Kimura’s pencil.

We are using だれ as the interrogative pronoun to ask the owner of the noun which is being pointed by combining it with . As we already knew that one of ’s function is to inform the owner of the noun. それ is being used as a demonstrative to point out the noun which is being asked for the owner.
