Japanese Language Lesson Minna no Nihongo 1 Chapter 9 Section B Part 4

This is another article presented to discuss the question given in Minna no Nihongo 1 book chapter 9 section B part 4 in page 75. In this article the Japanese language grammar used for further discussion is about ‘ga wakaru’ , the review on using this Japanese language grammar pattern is specified on the form of answering questions given in the book. The verb ‘wakaru’ can be translated as ‘to understand’ and in the rule which is adapted in Japanese language, this verb cannot use particle ‘wo’ in the practical use.  Based on the verb classification, this verb is categorized as a verb that describe the power, the ability to make own choices, decisions based on the skill, experience, knowledge gained by studying, learning, sensing or actively engaged. The verb ‘wakaru’ used particle ga because it expresses the understanding of something or an aspect.

Below is pattern :

Kanji : 。。。 名詞 動詞  「わかる」
Hiragana : 。。。 めいし どうし 「わかる」
Romaji : 。。。 meishi doushi 「wakaru」
Meaning : 。。。 noun verb「to understand」

The above pattern can be used in a real situation with the following example :

Kanji : 日本語がわかる。
Hiragana : にほんごがわかる。
Romaji : nihongo ga wakaru.
Meaning : (I) understand Japanese language.

The verb in the above example, ‘wakaru’ is a verb which is usually used with particle ‘ga’. The reason is in the above sentence and also with all the sentences as answers for the question in the book below involves something indicate ability, potential  or condition appear from human decision, effort, volition such as understanding, like, hate, need or be able to do something. And the above verb suitable in that description is ‘wakaru’ or to understand.

Based on the above example and patterns, below are all of the answers of all the questions which can be seen in Minna Nihongo book chapter 9 practice B part 3 page 75 :

1.Answer

Kanji                   :

シュミトさんは 英語が わかりますか。

。。。はい、よく わかります。

Hiragana            :

シュミトさんは えいごが わかりますか。

。。。はい、よく わかります。

Romaji               :

Syumitto-san wa eigo ga wakarimasuka。

。。。Hai, yoku wakarimasu。

Meaning             :

Does Schmit understand English language ?.

… Yes, (he) understands really well.

2.Answer

Kanji                   :

テレサちゃんは 漢字が わかりますか。

。。。いいえ、あまり わかりません。

Hiragana            :

テレサちゃんは かんじが わかりますか。

。。。いいえ、あまり わかりません。

Romaji                 :

Teresa-chan wa kanji ga wakarimasuka。

。。。Iie, amari wakarimasen。

Meaning             :

Does Theresa understand kanji ?。

。。。No, she doesn’t understand。

3.Answer

Kanji                   :

サントスさんは 日本語が わかりますか。

。。。はい、だいたい わかります。

Hiragana            :

サントスさんは にほんごが わかりますか。

。。。はい、だいたい わかります。

Romaji               :

Santosu-san wa nihongo ga wakarimasuka.

… Hai, daitai wakarimasu.

Meaning           :

Does Santos understand Japanese language ?.

。。。Yes, overal (he) understand.

4.Answer

Kanji                   :

山田さんは フランス語が わかりますか。

。。。いいえ、全然 わかりません。

Hiragana            :

やまださんは フランスごが わかりますか。

。。。いいえ、ぜんぜん わかりません。

Romaji                 :

Yamada-san wa furansugo ga wakarimasuka.

… Iie, zenzen wakarimasen.

Meaning           :

Does Yamada understand French ?.

… No, she doesn’t understand at all.

The full question which consists of several numbers can be seen completely in Minna no Nihongo 1 Chapter 9 Part 3 on page 75. The question itself is provided with images or pictures depicting the real situation which is needed to answer it. Whether the answer is in positive or negative form depends on the picture and also the other information provided.
