Chapter 6 Drill Section A Part 3

Another article which has the same purpose with the previous one is given right here. It contains several questions exist as part of Japanese lesson in Shin Nihongo no Kiso Japanese language lesson book on 1 chapter 6 drill section A part 3. This is an article which is also the same as the previous one summarizes all of the previous lessons used but only on interrogative pronoun content. Fill the blank in the question given as part of the sentence with the right one interrogative pronoun. Using the material from the previous lesson on the usage of interrogative pronoun, choose the most suitable combination of interrogative pronoun to be used to fill in the blank inside the question provided  as part of the lesson.

Below is the question and its corresponding answer. The question is displayed in Shin Nihongo no Kiso 1 chapter 6 drill section drill A part 3 on page53. Below are the answers :

1.Answer

Kanji       :「何歳」ですか。 。。。30歳です。

Hiragana    :「なんさい」ですか。 。。。30さいです。

Romaji      :「nan sai」desuka。 。。。30-sai desu。

Meaning     :How old (are you) ?.

The correct interrogative pronoun is ‘nansai’. It is a combination between ‘nan’ and ‘sai’. Where ‘nan’ is translated as ‘what’.The other part, ‘sai’ is a Japanese counter (助数詞「じょすうし」・josuushi) for age.  So, it is the suitable interrogative pronoun to ask for the age of someone else.

2.Answer

Kanji       : これは「何」ですか。 。。。灰皿です。

Hiragana    :これは「なん」ですか。 。。。はいざらです。

Romaji      : kore wa 「nan」desuka. …haizara desu.

Meaning     : what is this ?. …it is an ashtray.

It is an appropriate interrogative pronoun used to ask for an item which is ‘nan’ and it is translated as ‘what’.

3.Answer

Kanji       : それは「誰」のかばんですか。 。。。ラオさんのかばんです。

Hiragana    :それは「だれ」のかばんですか。 。。。ラオさんのかばんです。

Romaji      : sore wa 「dare」no kaban desuka. …Rao-san no kaban desu.

Meaning     : whose bag is that ?. …It is Rao’s bag.

This question needs ‘dare’ to ask for the item’s possession. It can be seen since there is particle no before the noun which is in the above sentence is kaban (bag).

 

4.Answer :

Kanji       : この ボールペンは「誰」のですか。 。。。わたしのです。

Hiragana    :この ボールペンは「だれ」のですか。 。。。わたしのです。

Romaji      : kono bo-rupen wa「dare」no desuka. …watashi no desu.

Meaning     : whose ballpoint is this ?. … it is mine.

This question’s answer is also ‘dare’ to ask the item’s possession. The difference from the previous sentence is in this sentence, after particle no, the item is not mentioned again since both parties involved in the conversation already knew the item being discussed. It is similar with the rough translation of ‘this ballpoint, whose is this ?’.

 

5.Answer :

Kanji       : お手洗いは「どこ」ですか。 。。。あそこです。

Hiragana    :おてあらいは「どこ」ですか。 。。。あそこです。

Romaji      : otearai wa 「doko」desuka。 。。。asoko desu。.

Meaning     : where is the toilet (restroom) ?. … it is over there.

This question’s answer is the interrogative pronoun ‘doko’ which is is used to ask location of a place.

 

6.Answer :

Kanji       : 受付は「どちら」ですか。 。。。そちらです。

Hiragana    :うけつけは「どちら」ですか。 。。。そちらです。

Romaji      : uketsuke wa 「dochira」desuka. …sochira desu.

Meaning     : which way is the receptionist ?. … that way.

The answer for this question is ‘dochira’. It is obviously the correct answer since in the above problem which is actually pair of question and answer, ‘sochira’ is the answer in the conversation exist in the problem. The answer, ‘sochira’ itself can be translated as ‘that way’. It is actually more focusing to the direction which can be used to get access to the location, place or people asked.

 

7.Answer :

Kanji       : 会社は「どちら」ですか。 。。。大阪機械です。

Hiragana    :かいしゃは「どちら」ですか。 。。。おおさかきかいです。

Romaji      : kaisha wa 「dochira」desuka. …Oosaka kikai desu.

Meaning     : which one is (your) company ?. … it is the Osaka Machinery.

This question’s answer is ‘dochira’. It is the same answer with the previous one but on the context of this question it can be translated as ‘which one’ asking to name the one of the company that the other party worked at.

 

8.Answer :

Kanji       : ラオさんの国は「どこ」ですか。 。。。インドです。

Hiragana    : ラオさんのくには「どこ」ですか。 。。。インドです。

Romaji      : Rao-san no kuni wa 「doko」desuka。 。。。Indo desu。

Meaning     : Where is Rao’s country (come from) ?.  … (He came from) India.

The correct answer for the above question’s context is ‘doko’. It is an appropriate interrogative pronoun used to ask the location of  place. The interrogative pronoun ‘doko’ in the above context is used to ask the origin of someone.

 

9.Answer :

Kanji       : それは「どこ」の時計ですか。 。。。日本の時計です。

Hiragana    : それは「どこ」のとけいですか。 。。。にほんのとけいです。

Romaji      : Sore wa 「doko」no tokei desuka。 。。。Nihon no tokei desu。

Meaning     : Where is that watch come from (made from) ?.  … It is a watch made in Japan.

The above question is used to ask for an item where it was made. It is also use the same interrogative pronoun for asking the origin of someone.

 

10.Answer :

Kanji      : NTCは 「何」の会社ですか。

。。。コンピューターの 会社です。

Hiragana   : NTCは「なん」のかいしゃとけいですか。 。。。コンピューターの かいしゃです。

Romaji     : NTC wa 「nan」no kaisha desuka。 。。。Konpyu-ta- no kaisha desu。

Meaning    : What company is NTC ?.  … It is a computer-related company.

This question is using ‘nan’ and can be translated as ‘what’. It is combined with particle no and the noun ‘kaisha’ or company in the end so that overall it can be translated as ‘what company’.

 

11.Answer :

Kanji           : この カメラは「いくら」ですか。 。。。 20000円です。

Hiragana        : この カメラは「いくら」ですか。 。。。20000えんです。

Romaji          : Kono kamera wa 「ikura」 desuka。 。。。20.000 en desu。

Meaning         : How much is this camera costs ?.   … It costs 20.000 yen.

The correct answer for the above question is ‘ikura’ as the interrogative pronoun for asking the price of an item.

 

12.Answer :

Kanji           : 今「何時」ですか。 。。。 9時です。

Hiragana        : いま「なんじ」ですか。 。。。9じです。

Romaji          :ima 「nanji」desuka。 。。。9jiです。

Meaning         : What time is it right now ?.  … It is 9 o’clock.

This question’s answer is the combination of ‘nanji’ which can be translated as ‘what time’. It is actually used to ask about time.

 

13.Answer :

Kanji           : 毎朝「何時」に 起きますか。 。。。 9時15分です。

Hiragana        : まいあさ「なんじ」に おきますか。 。。。9じ15ぶんです。

Romaji          : Mai asa 「nanji」ni okimasuka。  。。。9ji 15bun desu。

Meaning         : What time (do you) wake every morning ?.  … 9 o’clock past 15 minutes.

The correct answer for this question is the same with the previous one. It is ‘nanji’ which can be translated as what time and it is also used to ask for a certain time of an activity happened.

 

14.Answer :

Kanji           : 講義は「何時」から「何時」までですか。 。。。 2時から 5時までです。

Hiragana        : こうぎは「なんじ」から「なんじ」までですか。 。。。2じから 5じまでです。

Romaji          :Kougi wa 「nanji」kara 「nanji」made desuka。  。。。 2ji kara 5ji made desu.

Meaning         :From what time until what time is the lecture ?.  … It is from 2 o’clock until 5 o’clock.

This is the question where the answer is combination of several interrogative pronoun. It is used to ask for the starting time  and the ending time of an activity.  Interrogative pronoun ‘nanji kara’ can be translated as from what time and the other one, ‘nanji made’ can be translated as until what time.

15.Answer :

Kanji           : きょうは「何曜日」ですか。 。。。 火曜日です。

Hiragana        : きょうは「なんようび」ですか。 。。。かようびです。

Romaji          :kyou wa 「nanyoubi」desuka。  。。。 kayoubi desu.

Meaning         :what day today ?.  … (it is) Tuesday.

This question’s answer is how to choose the correct interrogative pronoun to ask for a day name. It is the combination of ‘nan’and‘youbi’which can be translated as ‘what day’.

 

16.Answer :

Kanji            : あした「どこ」へ 行きますか。 。。。 京都へ 行きます。

Hiragana         : あした「どこ」へ いきますか。 。。。 きょうとへ いきます。

Romaji           : ashita 「doko」e ikimasuka。 。。。 kyouto e ikimasu.

Meaning          : where are you going tomorrow ?.   … I am going to Kyoto.

The answer for this question is ‘doko’. It is an interrogative question which is asking the location of place where the subject want to go tomorrow.

 

17.Answer :

Kanji            :「何」で 京都へ 行きますか。 。。。 電車で 行きます。

Hiragana         :「なん」で きょうとへ いきますか。 。。。 でんしゃで いきます。

Romaji           :「nan」de Kyouto e ikimasuka。 。。。 densha de ikimasu.

Meaning          : with what (how) do you go to Kyouto ?。 。。。 (I) am going by train.

The correct’s answer is ‘nan’ which is used to ask for means, tools, a way to do or to perform an activity since it is combined with ‘de’. So, ‘nan de’ can be translated as ‘with what’. It is the perfect answer for answering what is the tool or mean for going to Kyoto.

 

18.Answer :

Kanji            :「誰」と 京都へ 行きますか。 。。。 友達と 行きます。

Hiragana         :「だれ」と きょうとへ いきますか。 。。。 ともだちと いきます。

Romaji           :「dare」to de Kyouto e ikimasuka。 。。。 Tomodachi to ikimasu.

Meaning          : with whom do you go to Kyouto ?。 。。。 (I) am going with my friend.

The correct answer for the above question is ‘dare’. It is used as the answer for a question asking with whom a person doing the activity. ‘Dare’ itself is translated as ‘who’.

 

19.Answer :

Kanji            :誕生日は「いつ」ですか。 。。。8月10日です。

Hiragana         :たんじょうびは「いつ」ですか。 。。。はちがつとおかです。

Romaji           :tanjyoubi wa「itsu」desuka。 。。。hachi gatsu tooka desu.

Meaning          :when is your birthday ?。 。。。 (It is) 10th of August.

The answer for the question is ‘itsu’ and can be translated as ‘when’. It is the perfect answer for asking the time of an activity or an event that will happen and has already happened.

 

20.Answer :

Kanji      :  今日は「何」「日」ですか。 。。。4月15日です。

Hiragana   : きょうは「なん」「にち」ですか。 。。。しがつじゅういちにちです(4がつ15にちです)。

Romaji     : kyou wa 「nan」「nichi」desuka. 。。。shigatsu jyuugo nichi desu.

Meaning    : what date today ?。 。。。today is 15th April.

The correct answer for the above question is ‘nan nichi’ which is an interrogative combined and can be translated as ‘what date’.

21.Answer :

Kanji      : けさ「何」を食べましたか。 。。。パンを食べました。

Hiragana   : けさ「なに」をたべましたか。 。。。パンをたべました。

Romaji     : kesa「nani」wo tabemashitaka. … pan wo tabemashita.

Meaning    : what did you eat this morning ?. … I ate bread.

The correct answer is ‘nani’ and can be translated as ‘what’. It is an interrogative pronoun used to ask for an item.

 

22.Answer :

Kanji      : 日曜日「何」をしましたか。 。。。銀座で 映画を 見ました。

Hiragana   : にちようび「なに」をしましたか。 。。。ぎんざで えいがを みました。

Romaji     : nichiyoubi 「nani」wo shimashitaka. … ginza de eiga wo mimashita.

Meaning    : what did you do at Sunday ?. … I watched movie at Ginza.

The correct answer is ‘nani’ and in this context it is used to askfor a specific activity done. Since it is also translated as‘what’.

 

23.Answer :

Kanji            : 「どこ」で 実習 しますか。 。。。東京で 実習します。

Hiragana         : 「どこ」で じっしゅう しますか。 。。。とうきょうで じっしゅうします。

Romaji           : 「doko」de jisshuu shimasuka。 。。。Toukyou de jisshuu shimasu。

Meaning          :  Where did you practice (train) ? … I train at Tokyo.

The correct answer for the above question is ‘doko’. It can be translated as ‘where’since in the question the subject ask the location of an activity done.
