Japanese Language Lesson Minna no Nihongo 1 Chapter 9 Section B Part 3

In this article, through the question given in Minna no Nihongo 1 book chapter 9 section B part 3 in page 75, there will be a review on using Japanese language grammar pattern on using -na type adjective  specifically. The -na type adjective which is reviewed in this article is ‘jyouzu’ and it can be translated as ‘skillfull, good at’. The sentence made is in a positive and negative one using the -na type adjective ‘jyouzu’, below is Japanese language grammar pattern :

Positive sentence

Kanji : 。。。 上手 です
Hiragana : 。。。 じょうず です
Romaji : 。。。 jyouzu desu
Meaning : 。。。 skillful

For an example :

Kanji : この子が数学がじょうずです。
Hiragana : このこがすがくがじょうずです。
Romaji : Konoko wa suugaku ga jyouzu desu.
Meaning : This child is good at math.

There is a pattern above which is used in Japanese language creating sentence using -na type adjective ‘jouzu’ in a positive sentence. It is followed with ‘desu’ which is a copula for positive sentence and can be considered as to be for either  verb or adjective in Japanese language.

On the other hand, there is also another pattern for the usage of adjective in negative sentence  :

Negative sentence

Kanji : 。。。 上手 じゃ ありません
Hiragana : 。。。 じょうず じゃ ありません
Romaji : 。。。 jyouzu jya arimasen
Meaning : 。。。 skillful not

For an example :

Kanji : 妹は裁縫が上手じゃ ありません。
Hiragana : いもうとはさいほうがじょうずじゃ ありません。
Romaji : Imouto wa saihou ga jyouzu jya arimasen.
Meaning : My younger sister is not good at sewing.

In negative sentence the grammar of Japanese language pattern for using it with a -na type adjective is quite simple. It can be accomplished by replacing ‘desu’ with ‘jya arimasen’ that indicates the negative aspect.
